Hey Guys! As I write this I'm on my way up to Connecticut to spend some time at the beach! This week I get to work with my faves at Rockstar Book Tours again. I seriously can't sing their praises enough <3 For today's blog post I got to read the amazing "Sasquatch, Love, and Other Imaginary Things". This book was SUCH a fun read! I devoured the entire thing in one sitting.
This is the story of Samantha, aka Sam, a quirky, geeky, Jewish girl who must spend three weeks sasquatch-hunting with her family for a reality TV show. Phew, that was a mouthful. But seriously, what an awesome premise! As if dealing with all of the normal ups and downs of the teenage experience wasn't enough, Sam is also dealing with money problems and uncertainty about her future. She wants to be a doctor, but she isn't sure if her family can afford it. Reluctantly, she agrees to take part in the TV show because of the prize money.
To her dismay, when she arrives she finds that the other team is made up of rich, attractive, well-dressed, ivy league bound prep school kids. In contrast, her chaotic, fanny-pack wearing family embarrasses her to no end. At the beginning, Sam mostly wishes she were anywhere but in the woods hunting for Sasquatch, but the longer the challenge goes on the more determined she is to win and wipe the smug look off the rich prep kids' faces. Throughout the challenge, Sam must make unlikely allies and use her wits, daring, and mad sabotage skills to find the mythical Sasquatch.
I loved this book. I grew up watching the Lost Tapes show on Animal Planet and all of the other shows about cryptids, so this book totally took me back. This book really captured the wacky, wonderful world of cryptozoology and all of the quirky characters in that world. Sam was a funny, smart, and fiercely protective narrator, and I loved her voice. The plot was well-paced, and the challenges of the reality show kept us guessing at every twist and turn. I especially love the relationship between Sam and her sisters. Capturing all the aspects of sibling relationships in a novel is very challenging, but this book did an excellent job. Their relationships were well-developed, and not at all one-dimensional.
If you're looking for a great, light-hearted, funny, summer read, then this book is for you. Sam is an awesome heroine to root for, the premise is original, and it's extremely well-written!
My final rating- 4.7/5
Thank you all for reading my review, and until next time, happy reading :)
About the Book:
Title: SASQUATCH, LOVE, AND OTHER IMAGINARY THINGS
Pride and Prejudice meets Animal Planet’s Finding Bigfoot in this humorous and heartfelt debut about a loving, quirky family on the hunt for the mythical Sasquatch.
Hunting for monsters was never so awkward.
It’s bad enough that Samantha’s parents, charter members of the Northern Ohio Bigfoot Society, have dragged their daughter around forever, hunting for yetis. But now they’re doing it on national TV, and worse, in front of an aristocratic prep-school crew including a boy who disdains Samantha’s family.
But when he scorns her humble Ohio roots, she becomes determined to take him down. As they go to war, their friction and attraction almost distract them from the hint that Sasquatch may actually be out there somewhere…
